Hide The Spinach. Green Smoothies to the Rescue!

by Mike on January 29, 2010

Now you can give your kids a dose of green goodness and they’ll never know it!   While Green for Life is mostly geared to the vegetarian adult market, it has lots of excellent information in it.  I highly recommend this paperback.  With 4-1/2 stars (188 reviews on Amazon.com) it’s a safe bet.  [TIP:  Buy a used copy and save a few bucks.  As of this posting, you can grab a used copy for about $7.00.]

We have a VitaMix machine at home and it whips up the best smoothies (and milkshakes too).  Here’s a recipe for you to try.  You will NOT taste the spinach, I promise!

Green Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup orange juice (any variety)

1/2 an apple (if you have a VitaMix, you can don’t have to peel or core the apple – just take the stem off)

1 large or 2 small oranges (peeled)

1 banana (peeled)

1/2 cup frozen strawberries

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1/2 cup frozen mixed fruit (peaches, melon, berries, etc.)

1 cup spinach leaves

1 cup ice cubes

1/4 cup cold water

Directions:

Add all the ingredients to your VitaMix or blender* (in the order as listed above).  Start the VitaMix on variable speed and quickly increase the speed.  Then, change to high speed and let the machine do its magic for about a minute.  You may need to use the plastic tamper to get all the ingredients fully-blended.

Pour yourself a glass of smoothie and enjoy.  They are SO good!  And full of nutrition.

*You’ll have to experiment if using a blender.  You may not be able to get all the ingredients in the machine.  If that’s the case, just scale down the ingredients.  But don’t leave out the spinach!
